Kia ora! I was born and mostly raised in Glen Innes, Auckland. My grandparents moved there in the fifties, and raised my whole whānau in a state house, on the now gentrified Taniwha Street.
While some of my motivation to write cultural reports stems from my background and growing up in an area of high deprivation, my previous work as a prison-based programme facilitator is where most of it is drawn. Through my mahi, I met many tāne who shared their experiences, insights, and knowledge with me. It is these men and their stories who drive my commitment to achieve better social justice outcomes.
Every behaviour has a whakapapa, and people cannot be seen in isolation from their histories. That is why I strongly believe in the kaupapa that underpins cultural report writing.
